Press Release from the Jewish Federation of Huntsville and North Alabama
“We will never forget,” pledges that the memory of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust during World War II will never be forgotten.
The State of Israel celebrates the Day of Remembrance as a national Memorial Day (Yom HaShoah). The Jewish Federation of Huntsville and North Alabama will commemorate Yom HaShoah on Sunday, April 23rd at 2pm at the Education Resource Center on the Space and Rocket Center Campus.
The program features the music of Kurt Wiell a German composer who escaped Germany in the early 30’s to come to America. He was a famous composer in the Cabaret scene in Berlin and in America he became successful on Broadway. His story is a journey from Berlin to Broadway. The irony of this journey is that in America he faced much of the anti-Semitism that was prevalent in Germany.
The advent of national radio networks gave voice to radio personalities that perpetrated a virulent form of anti-Semitism. The Silver Shirts mimicked Nazi Storm Troopers in their military dress and ideology. American public opinion was ambivalent about Nazi atrocities. A Gallop poll showed that fewer than half the population believed the Nazi were killing Jews as a state policy.
The Federation also sponsored an essay contest in area high schools in association with its Yom HaShoah activities. The winners will be announced and cash awards given. The winning essay will be read and teachers recognized.
The public is invited. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. The Education Resource Center is the first building on the left after passing the Marriott Hotel on Tranquility Road.
